A Gem in the City:
South Shore Natural Area
On Sunday, November 11th, we discovered a true gem in Chicago – the South Shore Natural Area. We’ve been to the South Shore Cultural Center a few times but had no idea that there was such a lovely nature area sitting, basically, right outside the back door!
Since the day we visited was somewhat chilly (and early in the day), we had the entire area to ourselves. While it’s not very big – only six acres – there’s a lot packed into those acres; dunes, a wetland area, woodlands, prairie, savanna, and shrubland habitats. Here are a couple of pictures. The first one is looking south towards the natural area, and the second is just one of the views looking out towards Lakes Michigan.
And, just in case you haven’t seen enough “exploding” milkweed this fall, here are a couple more pictures.
As always, here’s the video of our visit. [Breathe in, breathe out.]
We’re looking forward to seeing the South Shore Natural Area covered in snow and then again once everything is green!
